Global offshore wind power generation capacity reached 75.2 gigawatts (GW) last year, 24% more than the previous year, marking the second largest annual increase in wind power history. offshore wind energy, according to the recent report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

The “Global Offshore Wind Report 2024” highlighted that 10.8 GW of new offshore wind capacity was added to the global grid last year, bringing the total global offshore wind capacity to 75.2 GW by the end of 2023.

At the end of the same year, the installed capacity in Asia and Europe reached 41 GW and 34 GW respectively.

“The two regions combined accounted for 99.9% of the total global offshore wind capacity,” the report said.

The same source revealed that China leads the annual development of offshore wind power for the sixth consecutive year, with capacity increased by 6.3 GW in 2023.

Additionally, Europe saw a record year in 2023, with 3.8 GW of new offshore wind capacity added through 11 wind farms commissioned across 7 markets, accounting for the majority of new capacity.

Despite the sector’s considerable growth, the past year has also been turbulent for the offshore wind industry in Europe and Asia, according to the report.

The report highlighted “inflation, increasing investment costs and supply chain constraints” as challenges creating uncertainty in the sector.

The Global Wind Energy Council nevertheless remains optimistic for the years to come and predicts that the annual increase in offshore wind installations should triple by 2028 compared to the level observed in 2023.
