So that his “honesty” is rewarded, the homeless thirty-year-old will receive a gift voucher worth 50 euros from the local authorities.

A homeless man frequenting Amsterdam Central Station returned a wallet forgotten on a train with its contents of around 2,000 euros, according to local police who rewarded him for his good citizenship. Hadjer Al-Ali, 33, homeless for 18 months, made this discovery during a round to collect plastic bottles which he then exchanges for money. There was “around 2000 euros but unfortunately no identity papers or anything that could allow you to contact its owner”said the police.

“As we believe that honesty must pay, he received a “silver thumb” prize that we sometimes award to citizens, with a gift voucher worth 50 euros”, added the authorities. If no one comes forward to claim the lost money within a year, the sum will return to him.

“No matter what I find, I always return it”confided Hadjer Al-Ali in a video broadcast by local media The Stentor. “Maybe the owner has a business and can provide me with a job, or a place I could live in. We never know”.
