PORTRAIT – While the Senate takes a more crucial place than ever in the development of the finance bill, its general rapporteur (LR) is working hard in a “nice” spirit.

« I went down straight away, I told my colleague : “It’s not possible, they’re messing with us.” » Under the high ceilings of his office at the Palais du Luxembourg, the banter and slight accent of Jean-François Husson, LR senator from Meurthe-et-, resonate. Most of the time, the general rapporteur of the budget in the Senate since 2020 exudes a warm but calm air when he pedagogically lists, in session or in committee, the litany of figures which constitute the heart of the budgetary issues. « I am sometimes told that I tend to keep too much to myself »he grumbles, in the manner of those who are not in the habit of confiding much. But he sometimes comes out of his reserve, as when he recounts that day last March when, in a fit of blood, he decided to « go down to Bercy » in order to demand clarification on the situation of the public accounts.
