As COP29 approaches, which will begin on Monday November 11 in Baku, the shadow of Donald Trump already looms over the conference. The future president of the United States, who withdrew his country from the Paris agreement during his first term, will inevitably be at the center of the discussions, although he will not be present. The 29th United Nations climate conference will be held in Azerbaijan, just six days after the US presidential election.
Trump's transition team is already preparing executive orders to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreement again, according to the New York Times. The withdrawal would be accompanied by a series of controversial measures, such as reducing protected areas, lifting moratoriums on new drilling and mining projects, and ending the ban on new natural gas export terminals. Additionally, Trump could reverse a waiver that allows states like California to adopt stricter anti-pollution standards. Some members of his team are even considering moving the headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) out of Washington, while Donald Trump has promised to drill at all costs (“drill, baby, drill”).
