Lhe average annual salary in full-time equivalent of Belgian workers reached 57,989 euros gross in 2023, according to figures from the European statistical office Eurostat published on Thursday. This amount is more than half the average annual salary in the 27 member states of the European Union, which is 37,863 euros.

Belgium occupies fourth place in the list of European countries with the highest average gross annual salary. Only Luxembourg (81,064 euros), Denmark (67,604) and Ireland (58,679) do better. Bulgaria (13,503), Hungary (16,895) and Greece (17,013) occupy the bottom of the ranking.

Annual salaries increased by 6.2% on average in the EU compared to 2022. Central and Eastern European countries saw the largest increases, with Romania leading the way with a 17.8% increase, at 17,739 euros.

Belgian.

Belgium, which is, with Luxembourg, the only country in Europe where wage indexation is automatic, occupies 11e place, with an increase of 8.6%. Two of the three countries with the highest annual salaries, Luxembourg and Ireland, also saw substantial increases at 7.5 and 8% respectively.

Sweden is the only European country to have suffered a drop in the average annual salary in 2023. Converted into euros, this amount fell by four cents to reach 44,619 euros.

Eurostat’s wage statistics are based on Member States’ national accounts and the results of worker surveys.
