“As of November 4, 2024, Carrefour will cease all its operations in Jordan and will end its activities in the kingdom,” Carrefour said in a statement published on Facebook. The French distribution giant did not fail to show its gratitude to its “customers for their support” and apologized to them “for any inconvenience this decision may cause”.

Several international brands, accused of offering direct or indirect support to Israel in the conflict in Gaza, are the subject of boycotts in many Arab countries including Morocco. A significant number of consumers in these countries stop purchasing essential goods or medicines from these distribution brands, putting these multinationals in financial difficulty and eventually packing up.
The BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement took action last December against the Carrefour group in Morocco, which it accuses of complicity in war crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. At issue is the partnership between Carrefour and two Israeli companies, Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan, active in illegal Israeli settlements.
According to BDS, this partnership supports the exploitation of Palestinian resources and contributes to the maintenance of these settlements. BDS had organized demonstrations in front of Carrefour stores in Morocco at the end of December, despite a ban by local authorities, and called on Moroccans to protest to end Carrefour’s association with these companies. The movement also launched an online campaign with the hashtag “boycotting is resisting”, to raise awareness and mobilize the Moroccan public against Carrefour.
