Garden house: a first installation in Quebec

The first garden house on the territory of Quebec City was installed Monday morning, a few months after the authorization given by the City to set up such a unit on a property.

Since June 2024, the City has authorized owners of single-family homes to build an additional housing unit on their property.

The garden house must be located in the rear or side yard of the residence, must not exceed 80 m2 and must rest on a foundation connected to the ground.

This is what Ève Leblanc and her partner Luc Rousseau decided to do, in Ève’s parents’ backyard.

They feverishly witnessed the operation from 6:30 a.m. Monday morning when the house arrived on a trailer, a delicate operation to transfer the home from the trailer to its destination.

The construction of the garden house by the Minimaliste company located in Saint-Pierre-de-l’Île-d’Orléans took five weeks.

The small residence, which costs about $125,000, includes a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a small bathroom.

It was a way for the couple to be able to own property while being close to family.

For the moment, since the regulations came into force at the beginning of June, two permit requests have been made to the City and only one has been issued.

The various stakeholders met are of the opinion that the concept is increasingly popular.
