There will be no trains between November 23 and November 24, 2024 in GenevaKeystone
Train traffic will be interrupted at Cornavin station in Geneva from Saturday November 23 at 7 p.m. to Sunday November 24 at 3 p.m. The operation will allow the SBB to put its new computerized command center into service (interlocking). Substitute buses, coaches and trams are planned.
Why this stop?
From November 21 to 25, 2024, the SBB will make the transition from the old system put into service in 1986 to the new one, they announced Thursday in a press release. Equipped with more advanced technologies, the new center will ensure the smooth circulation of trains around the station in the context of the expected increase in the number of travelers on the Lausanne-Geneva axis in the coming decades.
Which sector will be affected?
The commissioning of the new interlocking of Geneva station requires a total interruption of rail traffic in the Coppet – Geneva – Geneva Airport – Bellegarde (F) – Annemasse (F) sector for 20 hours from Saturday at 7 p.m. to Sunday 24 at 3 p.m.
What alternatives are offered?
A major substitution system by buses, coaches and trams has been put in place.
SBB recommends checking the timetable online before each journey. It will be necessary to plan for extended travel times for access to Geneva airport. From November 24, the track numbering will also be changed at the station.
How long did the work last?
Construction work on the new command center took place between 2019 and 2024. The “real brain” of the station, it will be responsible for controlling and piloting all of the switches and railway signals.
A new service building was erected and now houses 88 electrical cabinets. The project also made it possible to renew all the security and traffic management installations. A cable tunnel 110 meters long and 1.5 meters wide was also built under the tracks using a micro-tunneling machine. The year 2024 was dedicated to testing to verify the operation of each installation, one by one.
With 1,500 controlled elements (signals, beacons, switches, etc.), connected by 230 kilometers of cable, the Geneva interlocking station will become the largest computerized command center of the SBB. This project is part of the preliminary work on the underground station which aims to strengthen the operation of the station and guarantee the circulation of trains during its construction. The investment amounts to 116 million francs. (jah/ats)
