US health authorities confirmed Wednesday that slivered onions used by McDonald's are likely the cause of a wave of Escherichia coli infections, which sickened 90 people. “Slivered onions are the likely source of the disease”said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These onions were supplied by contract manufacturer Taylor Farms. The latter launched a voluntary recall of this product, and McDonald's also indicated that it had withdrawn them from sale.
A risk now “very low”
The number of sick patients has now reached 90 people, 27 of whom had to be hospitalized. The number of deaths remains at one, an elderly person in Colorado. But “all new diseases appeared before” actions taken by Taylor Farms and McDonald's, the CDC said. Taking these into account, the agency considers that “the risk to the public” is now “very low”.
McDonald's had indicated over the weekend that it had received the results of tests which did not reveal the presence of E. coli bacteria in ground beef. In total, 13 American states are affected by the recorded infections. The E. coli bacteria causes stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, usually lasting three to four days. Most people recover without treatment, but some people may develop complications.
