(Ecofin Agency) – Namibia is the leading African producer of uranium and the third in the world. With rising global demand, the country is attracting more and more investment for the development of new mines or restarting previously suspended projects.

Africa’s leading producer of uranium, Namibia should be home to a new mine by 2026. In a press release published on June 4, Australia’s Deep Yellow announced the choice of Ausenco Services as preferred partner for an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract at its Namibian Tumas project.

Ausenco has already participated in the definitive feasibility study of February 2023, which notably showed that Tumas can deliver 3.6 million books annually over more than 22 years. Deep Yellow is expected to sign the EPCM contract with Ausenco, once the final investment decision is made in the third quarter of 2024, with a view to commencing construction of Namibia’s fourth uranium mine.

Ausenco is a market-leading engineering company, highly regarded within the industry for its technical skills and experience in project delivery. The arrival of Ausenco will complete the team responsible for carrying out the project and will bring significant added value to the Tumas project“, commented John Borshoff, CEO of Deep Yellow.

As a reminder, Tumas should become the fourth mine in Namibia. Its entry into service is planned in a context where global demand for uranium is expected to increase due to renewed interest in nuclear energy. Other projects are also under development in Namibia, but also in Niger (second African producer) and in Mauritania, to benefit from these prospects.
