(Ecofin Agency) – The Dangote refinery is trying to establish itself as a key player in the downstream segment of the African oil industry, particularly in the supply of jet fuel, the first cargoes of which were delivered to oil traders in April.

The Dangote Group refinery has reached a milestone by exporting its first cargo of jet fuel to Europe. The information was relayed on Friday, May 31, by the local press citing data from the financial analysis provider S&P Global.

These show that a tanker, called Doric Breeze, left the Nigerian coast on Monday, May 27, with 45,000 tons of jet fuel on board destined for the Netherlands. A cargo which is an integral part of a tender for a total of 120,000 metric tonnes for which BP and Cepsa responded as main buyers.

This development comes in the wake of several other jet fuel exports made by the Dangote refinery in the West African sub-region, notably to Senegal, Togo and Ghana, while naphtha, fuel oil and diesel from the installation have already reached the markets of Europe and Asia.

If this marks a key advance in the activities of the refinery, operational for approximately 6 months, it is also a step in strengthening the role of the refinery in supplying the international market with petroleum products.

A few weeks ago, the Dangote group reaffirmed its intention to continue importing American crude, in accordance with a plan which includes the supply of gasoline and the export of very low sulfur diesel to Europe. by the third quarter of 2024. At the same time, a dual listing of the refinery on the Lagos and London Stock Exchanges was announced by Aliko Dangote, the group’s CEO.
