At the bend in the corridor of the neonatology department of Al Makassed hospital, an island of colors catches the eye. In a medical room, stuffed animals, toys and small plastic animals are lined up against the wall. Toy music and baby babbles mix with the sounds of medical devices. In a corner of the room, small cots with blankets left in a ball. On a brightly colored play mat, Najwa, Nour and Nejma are having fun, almost carefree.
However, a hundred kilometers away, their mother, Hanane Albyouk, is experiencing a real nightmare. Infertile, it took the 24-year-old woman five years to become pregnant, ultimately through in vitro fertilization. On August 21, 2023, about to give birth to her triplets, she was evacuated from Mawasi-Khan Younes, in southern Gaza, to Al Makassed hospital in East Jerusalem. The doctors decide to give birth by cesarean section. Babies are born prematurely, two months premature.
