Thematic Meeting on the positive effects of regular migration for SD

On May 15 and 16, 2024, the Thematic Meeting of the Rabat Process was held on the positive effects of regular migration for sustainable development. Organized in Lisbon under the co-presidency of Portugal and Senegal, this strategic event, in connection with the Cadiz Action Plan, constitutes a platform to discuss the role of entrepreneurship and the engagement of diasporas in the migration context, with particular attention paid to women and young people.

The stated objective is to promote collaboration between European and African countries, including Morocco, in order to maximize the benefits of regular migration for sustainable development. This meeting seeks to facilitate the sharing of experiences and good practices, with a view to strengthening the positive impacts of migration on countries of origin, transit and destination.

As a reminder, according to the 2024 report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in 2020, Morocco was ranked 18th among the 20 countries with the largest relative emitters of migrants in the world, with officially 3.25 million migrants. emigrants, or 8.1% of its total population, making it a country of transit and immigration.

During this meeting, participants sought to identify existing obstacles and barriers that hinder diaspora engagement, in order to formulate recommendations to minimize them. Indeed, the implementation of strategies and policies based on evidence is necessary.

Meanwhile, preparation for the Thematic Meeting on mobility programs, dedicated to the work of civil society organizations (CSOs) and diasporas, is underway. It will take place from June 20 to 21, 2024, in Praia (Cape Verde). Registrations are open until May 30, 2024.
