Ryanair has announced the closure of its air base at Bordeaux Mérignac airport from November 2024. The reason: “a failure of commercial negotiations on the extension of Ryanair’s low-cost services.

Moving its base “towards less expensive airports elsewhere in Europe” implies the loss of 90 jobs pilots, cabin crew and engineers – who would however be offered “similar positions in other attractive bases across Europe”.

Enough to make the National Union of Commercial Aircrew Personnel (SNPNC-FO) react, which denounces the practices of the low-cost airline.

“Stunning financial aid”

The union, which represents flight attendants in France, explains that Ryanair has until now benefited from “huge financial aid” to establish itself in Gironde. But “after 5 years of operation, the airport management was called to order by the Court of Auditors”, supports the union.

This is what would have pushed management to practice costs “in line with market prices” with the low-cost airline, which would have “decided to pack up immediately”.

The company confirms, in a press release, that due to “increasing costs”, it has “no other financial alternative than to close [sa] Bordeaux base”.

Disastrous consequences for employees

The situation worries the union, which is calling for the establishment of a job saving plan for Bordeaux employees.

Even today, Ryanair treats its employees like sandbags. She is preparing to move them to other European bases without worrying for a moment about the dramatic personal consequences that this entails.

National Union of Cabin Crew

The departure of the company also involves the elimination of 39 Ryanair routes, and the loss of 20 destinations in total (which are not served by other airlines).
