(Agence Ecofin) – Solar energy is leading the energy revolution, being the fastest growing Source of electricity production over the last two decades and overtaking wind power to become the largest Source of new electricity.

In 2023, renewable energy will generate a record 30% of global electricity, thanks in particular to the growth of solar and wind energy. This is what reveals a report published on May 8 by the Think Tank specializing in energy, EMBER.

The report indicates that this increase is mainly the result of the performance of solar and wind whose production increased from 0.2% in 2000 to a record level of 13.4% in 2023.

If we add nuclear to these two renewable energies, the world will have produced almost 40% of its electricity from low-carbon sources in 2023, according to the report, which highlights that this has led to a drop in CO intensity2 of global electricity production with a new level 12% lower than the peak reached in 2007.

In terms of performance by region, China remains the largest contributor in 2023, with 51% of additional global solar production and 60% of new global wind production.

Africa, for its part, performs poorly compared to other regions, attracting only a very small share of global energy financing, around 3%. Furthermore, the continent’s countries represent only 3% of global electricity demand, even though they have 18% of the world’s population.
