Repeating a grade: a second chance or a trauma?

After the publication of the PISA ranking, in December 2023, and a historic drop in the level of students in French and mathematics, Gabriel Attal, Minister of National Education before being appointed Prime Minister, unveiled measures to “straighten the level” of French students by 2027, of which repeating primary school is part of.

Although the number of repetitions has fallen considerably since the 2000s, the question is still debated despite a majority of studies showing that repetition has no effect on long-term academic performance. In some countries such as Japan, Iceland and Norway, grade repetition almost no longer exists.

What are the alternatives to repeating a year? How can we help students in difficulty?

On the occasion of World Education Day.
