(Agence Ecofin) – In difficulty, Tmcel is seeking to strengthen the quality of its services to establish itself on the national telecoms market. The state-owned company competes with Vodacom and Movitel.

Mozambican state-owned telecom company Tmcel has partnered with Swedish technology company Ericsson to modernize its operational and business support systems. The collaboration, announced on Thursday October 3, should make it possible to improve network performance, facilitate the personalization of offers for subscribers and accelerate the digital transformation of the telecoms operator.

« At Tmcel, our commitment to Mozambique is based on providing reliable and innovative services to our customers. Our partnership with Ericsson is a key step in delivering on this commitment, enabling us to improve our operational efficiencies and deliver better, more responsive services to our subscribers. By modernizing our monetization suite with Ericsson, we are ensuring we can meet the evolving needs of our community and contribute to the nation’s digital future “, declared Mahomed Mussá, president of the Tmcel management committee.

Improving operational support systems is part of the measures planned by the Mozambican government to revitalize ailing Tmcel. The state-owned company recorded a loss of 2.1 billion meticals ($32.8 million) in 2023, according to its activity report. In 2022, the operator had already suffered losses of almost 4.3 billion meticals. As of December 31, 2023, the company had liabilities of 37.9 billion meticals, exceeding total assets of 27.8 billion meticals.

According to Todd Ashton, vice president and head of Southern and East Africa, Ericsson, the partnership will provide Tmcel with the flexibility and scalability needed to “ adapt to changing customer demands and stay competitive in the market “. Between 2017 and 2021, the operator saw its mobile subscriber base fall by 69%, reaching around 2 million, according to data from the Communications Regulatory Authority of Mozambique (INCM). As of December 31, 2023, the company claimed 1.84 million mobile customers and 27,466 landline customers, in a market where it competes with Vodacom and Movitel.
