Automobile in Luxembourg: Bilia buys BMW Schmitz from Mersch

Bilia announced this Wednesday that it had purchased the BMW Schmitz car dealership in Mersch. This is the first acquisition made by the Swedish group since its establishment in the Grand Duchy, in 2016 in collaboration with Philippe Emond, since retired. It now has two sites, including the Cloche d’Or concession, and four in the Greater Region, for 340 employees.

With 80 new employees, who remain in place, the workforce in Luxembourg is thus increased to 220 people. “Cloppenburg Automobile SE, former owner of Carlo Schmitz Sàrl, was looking for a buyer to be able to concentrate on the German market. For her part, Bilia has always wanted to establish a solid and lasting presence in the Grand Duchy,” explains Bilia in her press release. The transition of the Mersch dealership under the Bilia banner will take place gradually, before being visibly visible for the next Autofestival, therefore probably in mid-January 2025.

The amount of the transaction was not communicated. According to figures provided to The essentialsthe two Luxembourg entities currently sell a combined 3,000 BMW brand vehicles per year. The Mersch site brings the Alpina brand to Bilia. If the new dealership is not yet a direct sales point for MINI, the Swedish group’s other strong brand in the country, it cannot be ruled out that this will become the case in the coming years.
