French electric cars take their revenge

4 French electric cars dominate the registration rankings for April 2024. This is good news for Peugeot and Renault. Too bad it was a sham success.

The months follow each other, but are not always the same regarding the registrations of electric cars in France. If, like last month, the Peugeot e-208 remains in the lead with a comfortable lead, it is more surprising to see Tesla only appear in 6th position. The AAA Data ranking of electric car registrations – published on May 1 – therefore reserves some surprises.

Peugeot and Renault enjoy great domination of the April rankings. A position that both manufacturers can rejoice in. However, this hardly hides results biased by both social leasing and low registration numbers among all manufacturers.

The French still on social leasing

If the Peugeot e-208, Peugeot e-2008, Renault Twingo e-tech and Renault Mégane e-tech occupy the first 4 places in the April ranking in this order, it is still thanks to the deliveries of cars ordered with social leasing. Make no mistake, this is all very artificial.

The €13,000 in aid granted for leasing packages, ranging from €40 to €150 per month, has significantly boosted orders. The coming months should continue to see these models delivered to customers gradually. Even if Peugeot seems to have already picked up a good pace from February.

Over the first 4 months of 2024, the Peugeot e-208 continues to widen the gap compared to Tesla’s Model Y in France. Peugeot’s electric city car already has 13,262 examples put into circulation, compared to 7,909 for the Model Y. The French company even manages to rank in a good position on the entire European market thanks to good French results.

Two things stand out about the month of April 2024:

  • Tesla registrations are down, which is not necessarily abnormal after the end of the first quarter. We will have to monitor in May whether the slowdown continues.
  • The end of the bonus for Chinese models is now visible in the statistics. The MG4, which was still in the TOP 10 in March, is now only in 19th place. A drop that can also be observed on other MG or BYD models.

A global slowdown

The last information to remember from this monthly ranking is the drop in the number of electric vehicles registered in April. Only 24,843 copies were delivered, compared to 33,940 for the month of March. This is still better than the year 2023, when only 17,112 electric cars were registered.

We should not draw conclusions too quickly. The beginnings of the year are often slower than the rest. The month of May with its bridges is generally not the best indicator, we will probably have to wait until the end of June to judge the state of the electric car market in France.
