CPI in April increases slightly by 0.07%

The consumer price index (CPI) in April edged up 0.07% from the previous month and 4.4% year-on-year, mainly fueled by rising oil prices, the General Statistics (GSO), Monday April 29.

Among the 11 major consumer goods and services groups, eight saw their prices increase from the previous month, while the remaining three groups saw their prices fall.

The GSO report shows that domestic gasoline prices increased by 4.78 percent and diesel prices by 2.01 percent, leading to an increase in transportation costs and related services of 1.95 percent. Notably, air transportation costs soared 10.42% due to high travel demand during the five-day holiday period, starting April 27.

At the same time, medicines and medical services increased slightly by 0.92% due to seasonal changes and the emergence of pathogenic viruses.

In addition, other products and services whose prices increased include beverages and tobacco (up 0.09%); clothing, headgear and shoes (0.12%); housing and construction materials (0.21%); household appliances (0.11%); culture-entertainment-tourism services (0.03%); and other goods and services (0.27%).

The three groups of goods and services whose prices fell were food services (down 0.13%); postal and telecommunications services (0.17%); and education (2.93%).

In April, domestic gold prices fluctuated in the same direction as global gold prices. The national gold price index in April increased by 6.95% compared to the previous month, 17.01% compared to December 2023 and 28.62% compared to the same period of last year. The average increase over the first four months of 2024 is 20.75%.

The GSO said core inflation in April climbed 0.17 percent from the previous month and 2.79 percent from the same period last year. On average, core inflation from January to April increased by 2.81% compared to the same period last year, which is lower than the CPI average of 3.93%.
