Why we recommend the Tesla Model Y rival?

Among the many electric cars we test, one model has recently stood out. The Ford Explorer is positioned as an interesting alternative to the Tesla Model Y. Here’s why the Frandroid editorial team recommends this model.

In the market for the best electric cars, “historical” manufacturers are gradually starting to make a place for themselves. The goal: to compete with the hegemony of Tesla and its fleet. With the Ford Explorer, the American company is calling on the know-how of Volkwagen, in order to offer a base identical to the ID.4.

The result is a good quality car. During our test, the Ford Explorer received a score of 8/10. With great features for everyday use and especially its performance, the car is a great investment. This is why the Survoltés team recommends the Ford Explorer.

Why do we recommend the Ford Explorer?

For its beautiful interior space

As an SUV, this Ford Explorer leaves a lot of space in the heart of the cabin. If you are familiar with the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV, then you should not be disoriented, with furniture custom-developed by Ford. This one offers plenty of storage everywhere.

In the back, the seats are comfortable with space to store your feet. The 450-litre boot also leaves enough space with the possibility of removing the rear shelf to increase to 530 litres. The central screen and its 14.6-inch panel are appreciable.

For its immense autonomy

Regardless of the version chosen, you are entitled to a minimum WLTP range of 566 km — while waiting for the arrival of a version with a 52 kWh battery. In order to have good energy management, the Ford Explorer is equipped with a route planner. The latter plans fast charging stops on your journey. As for recharging, regardless of the version chosen, 10 to 80% is done in less than 30 minutes.

This also goes hand in hand with very measured consumption. This is approved at 13.9 kWh / 100 km in its Propulsion version. On the road, we were able to observe on a 129 km circuit a consumption of 17.5 kWh / 100 km. So before taking advantage of it, make sure to choose the right configuration.

For his conduct

If the energy management is good, it also owes it to its driving comfort. Ford relies on the Volkwagen platform with identical behavior. Driving is pleasant with good visibility at the wheel. The all-wheel drive version allows you to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. However, you will have to make a choice. Indeed, the sportiness of the vehicle comes at the expense of autonomy…

For the autonomy/price ratio

The electric Ford Explorer is already available in at a starting price of 45,900 euros while waiting for the version with a smaller battery. If you have to invest in a model, we recommend the Propulsion Extended Range at 46,900 euros without the ecological bonus deducted. It manages to place itself among the best electric cars in its category.

What are the weak points of this electric Ford Explorer?

Even though this electric car is our recommendation, there are a few weak points to be aware of. These are not deal breakers, but may make you reconsider your purchase.

Within the Ford Explorer, the home interface that constitutes the infotainment system is still a little too light. It is not the most intuitive with a lack of responsiveness. Fortunately, it is possible to change to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Above all, the real problem with this car is the options. Thus, the heat pump is an option at 1150 euros, which is not available here. Likewise, the driving aids can be chosen as an option. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y Propulsion Grande Autonomie, with full standard equipment, is 46,900 euros.

In the electric SUV sector, the reference remains the Tesla Model Y here in the Long Range Propulsion version. The latter remains much more interesting in terms of price/performance ratio. However, the Ford Explorer remains relevant.

Compared to a Renault Scénic E-Tech, the equipment is more complete for a similar price, and it is also worth noting the presence of Android Automotive. However, charging in place is slower. The Peugeot e-3008 is also interesting with 529 kilometers. If you ever want to stick to the basics, it is possible to turn to cars sharing the technical base of the Volkwagen ID.4.
