An Ecology Minister at the Heart of a Controversy, the Reason – La Nouvelle Tribune

The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of Morocco, Leila Benaliis facing a new wave of criticism. This controversy comes after the recent acquisition of company vehicles, some of which run on diesel. The decision raises questions, particularly in a context where Morocco is actively promoting the transition to renewable energies.

The cost of the vehicles, which exceeds 1.2 million dirhams for two luxury cars, attracts attention. This choice is seen as inappropriate, especially since Minister Benali, in charge of the country’s energy policy, should set an example in terms of sustainable mobility. The vehicles ordered also include hybrid models for her colleagues, but this is not enough to appease the critics. This acquisition, considered excessive, comes at a time when the country is going through an economic crisis, which further fuels the debate on the management of public resources.

The case is reminiscent of a previous controversy within the Moroccan government. The Ministry of Digital Transition had also been criticized for having launched a call for tenders for the purchase of expensive cars. This previous scandal adds further weight to the criticism directed at Minister Benali, exacerbating the perception of a disconnect between political leaders and the ecological issues they publicly defend.

Critics also point to the irony of the situation: as Morocco steps up its efforts to promote the adoption of green energy, the minister in charge of this transition seems to ignore these principles in her own transportation choices. Moreover, this decision echoes similar practices within her party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), another member of which recently acquired luxury vehicles.
