With the advent of streaming platforms, watching TV series has become addictive. Many viewers impatiently await the release of the next episode or the following season of their favorite series. A phenomenon generated by precise script codesguarantors of success such as suspense, cliffhangers (narrative technique which consists of cutting the action in two to arouse curiosity), multiple points of view, episodic intrigues… Methods which have not escaped the Toulousain Aurélien Verdun, the founder of Trilogie Éditions, who launched a new concept, that of the… literary series.
An innovative concept
This is a truly innovative format. Ambition? “Offering gripping and memorable stories to recreate a fan’s encounter with their series, the characters and the story in order to savor it little by little! » The idea is therefore to bringing “serial novels” up to date which appeared in the newspapers of the 19the century, drawing inspiration from the standards of the TV series. The mixture of the two genres giving birth to a real revolution in the world of publishing. The principle is simple: after subscribing to a literary series (€49.90), the reader receives, each month, a volume from the current season. Once the volume is finished, he will have to wait until next month to discover the next one. and therefore, the rest of the plot. “Each episode is an opportunity to learn more about the story, about the past, present and future of the characters,” explains the publishing house.
And just like a TV series, once the episodes are released, fans will be able to get them all at once. So, If you want to experience the concept to the fullest, you will need to subscribe before the publication of the first volume in a series : you will receive a book every month. Otherwise, the volumes already published will be sent to you in a first package before resuming the monthly rhythm of the series. Likewise, you will only be able to claim an episodic shipment on the current series, the previous ones being then launched on the direct sales market.
“Duality”, the first of its kind
The “Duality” series for example, began in September 2024 and is available in 10 episodes. It marks the official launch of the concept of a subscription literary series. Aurélien Verdun, who is the author, recounts the synopsis: “Following a series of unprecedented bombings, the United States is nothing more than a vast disaster zone. Left to their own devices, the survivors organize themselves and group together in camps, the only criterion for access to which is biological sex. Due to an inexplicable turnaround, men and women are now enemies and face each other in a guerrilla war without mercy or pity. In this new world, in total disorder and where anyone is a threat, a few loners try to survive on their own and, above all, to find a way out of this nightmare… If there is one. . »
Behind a captivating narrative, the author explores, often with situations pushed to the point of exaggeration, the dysfunctions and contradictions of Western societies, whether social or political. The work questions the human condition : is the individual intrinsically autonomous or shaped by the frameworks imposed by society? When these structures disappear, what is left of us? A post-apocalyptic series in which “the diversity of the characters is one of the strengths of the story. Many of them have survived the tragedy that shook the country and, while each has their own past and their own goals, not all of them necessarily have a future,” reveals the author. But be careful, as in all successful series, passages of violence and sex pepper the pages.
“Duality” will see the last episode of season 1 released next June. But let the enthusiasts rest assured, season 2 is already in preparation. As well as a new series. But the publishing team is keeping the secret: “It might be thriller, new romance, childhood or even early childhood… The possibilities are endless. »
