Le Maine Libre: “The great book of the people of Sarthe, more than 400 personalities throughout history.” Where did this idea come from to embark on such a work?
Bertrand Coudreau: “I have already written four books on these men and women who have marked the history of our department. “72 celebrities from Sarthe”, “The great destinies of the Prytanée” (with Jean-Christophe Couderc and Pascale Pineau), “The illustrious guests of Solesmes” (with Jean-Luc Gagneux), and “The astonishing visitors to Sarthe.” I then told myself that I should publish a dictionary, something that would be as comprehensive as possible. I started researching, I made index cards, and I quickly understood that it would be a gigantic task, which would take me at least 20 years. So, I had the idea of launching an appeal among the Authors of Maine and Loir, of which I was at the time the vice-president, before becoming the president some time ago. Who would agree to embark on this project with me?”
