“A baby, a book” is a national operation, but it has not taken place in Narbonne since 2014. Thursday, November 21, the speech therapy prevention association “Parl11-en” went to the maternity ward of the Narbonne hospital to offer cuddly books to young people and future parents. Five speech therapists from the region were mobilized to discuss the importance of language, interactions and books from birth. A special moment to answer parents' questions about communicating with their baby. Without forgetting to forge links with hospital services.
Favor books over screens
This meeting also made it possible to address the dangers of massive or early use of screens, while contributing to the prevention of illiteracy. In addition to the maternity ward, the speech therapists also went to the pediatric ward to meet children under 2 years old and their families. “Beyond the communication stunt, we want to perpetuate this action and establish partnerships with the teams,” underlined Véronique Vandaele and Sophie Viguier-Cognon, coordinators of the “A baby, a book” action.
They also recalled how “babies are born armed to communicate and everything is language: carrying, looking, shared pleasure…”. Moreover, the cuddly book offered that day to parents “is above all a symbolic support, an object of communication and a trigger”. Health personnel, like families, welcomed this action, “which aims to favor reading instead of screens for toddlers from birth. But without making parents feel guilty.”
