Decisive victory for the French translation of the book “ 1213”

1213, the decisive battle of the cross against the Albigensians” by Martín Alvira Cabrer is now available in French after a long translation work. This Thursday, November 21, the municipal theater, Marc Sebbah de Muret hosted an exceptional conference around the Battle of Muret in 1213.

The Battle of Muret, which took place on September 12, 1213, pitted the troops of Peter II of Aragon, allied to the Occitan counts, against the crusading forces of Simon de Montfort, mandated by the Catholic Church. Despite their numerical inferiority, the crusaders inflicted a decisive defeat, marking the death of Peter II and putting an end to Aragonese ambitions in Occitania. This battle sealed the destiny of the region by anchoring it under French authority, going well beyond religious issues to include political and territorial struggles.

During the conference, Christophe Marquez, president of the Muretain heritage society, praised the long-term work which enabled this translation: “Without the commitment of Evelyne Encoyand Castera and the expertise of Vent Terral editions, this version French would never have seen the light of day.” The mayor of Muret, André Mandement, also underlined the importance of this event for the city: “The battle of Muret is part of our heritage. We all make the history of the city of Muret which reminds us of the historical role of our city in the shaping of Today, Muret has become a major element in the development of the metropolitan area. Jordi Blanc, editor, concluded: “The editor is only a ferryman, a conduit from the writer to the reader. Muret is one of the three great battles which redrew the borders of Europe. This book offers an original and documented analysis.”

Martín Alvira Cabrer, renowned medievalist historian, has structured his work into several clear and detailed chapters. It explores the complex alliances, military strategies and memorial consequences of this pivotal event in medieval history.

“This dream, a publication in French, is now a reality. The Pyrenees have not always been a border. It is essential to recognize that in more than eight centuries since September 1213, history has taken its course, making it futile the speculations on an evolution which never came to fruition”, concluded the author.
