The “Give it to read” operation continues until November 20. Objective: to get the book into everyone’s hands.
Every year, until November 20, the French bookstore union organizes the solidarity operation “Donnez à lire”, an action supported by Secours populaire. Independent bookstores are being contacted on this occasion and in Agde, for the fourth consecutive year, it is the La Promenade au Phare bookstore which is highlighting this action.
The objective is to promote Books to young people, to give young people the desire to read, to dream, to imagine a story through reading.
Rediscover the notion of reading for pleasure
“You have to open the door of the bookstore and it’s not always easy for young people”thinks Corinne Calmels, the owner of the establishment. “For me, it was obvious to support this action from the start, which affects children who do not usually come to bookstores. Because it allows them to read books that are not academic, but simply related to the notion of pleasure.”
Bringing an audience closer to culture
The principle is simple: each customer who comes to La Promenade au Phare can buy a children's book by adding it to their basket. They will then be given to the local branch of Secours populaire français. “It’s important to have partner bookstores”explains Élisabeth Cerneau, general secretary of the popular relief of Agde. “Not only is it always a pleasure for a young person to receive a book, but the customers who make this gesture are also delighted.” Same feeling for Thierry Bouru, volunteer at Secours populaire, who coordinates this operation: “These books will be given to a child whose families are supported throughout the year”he explains. “This operation encourages the practice of reading among a distant audience. It is an unfailing determination to help, support and transmit through regular actions everyone's taste for and access to culture.”
