Château-Chinon (City). Make reading accessible to everyone. The Give to read operation has been in full swing since its launch on Thursday October 17. This initiative allows bookstore customers to offer children’s books to children and adolescents whose families are supported all year round by the French Secours Populaire.
The Le Goût des mots bookstore in Château-Chinon is participating in the operation again this year.
Thirty-four books already collected
The principle is simple: until Wednesday November 20, customers of participating bookstores can choose and add a children’s book to their purchases. A book which will then be offered by Secours Populaire volunteers to a child or teenager who does not have access to it.
“Fight against financial and social divides”
“Access to books and reading for all is a subject that is particularly close to my heart, as is the idea of helping with dignity with new works, chosen one by one by donors,” says Véronique Méry from the bookstore Le Goût des mots.
Halfway through the operation, thirty-four books have already been collected by the Château-Chinese bookseller. “This year, I have few donors. Of the thirty-four books, half comes from two big donors, the rest, from regular donors, all are happy to contribute to the operation. Some have special requests, like a client who asked me for a book that helps girls grow up. »
Véronique Méry and Ingrid Morice, departmental director of Secours Populaire, are unanimous: “We feel a slowdown in consumption”.
The participating Clamecy bookstore
“At Secours Populaire, we have more and more requests for food, which is our gateway, and also for cultural activities. We are doing everything we can to combat this prevailing gloom and the financial and social divides that exist. »
Last year, twenty-five children were able to benefit from the operation, let’s hope there are more this year, with the help of another participating bookstore, that of Clamecy.
