Marie Sarrat took over the Librairie des Chartrons, in Bordeaux, last summer. Located in a strategic location, at the corner of Cours Saint-Louis and Rue Berthelot, it is close to schools. One of the manager’s priorities was to gain more light. She therefore had the transoms above the windows and bay window removed. She also changed the flooring in the youth section and reorganized the displays by modifying the furniture, thus offering a greater choice of books, better displayed. She also changed the logo of her store.
New in the bookstore, second-hand books can be returned under conditions and exchanged for vouchers. The space reserved for second-hand books is limited so as not to degrade the sales area. It is always possible to order a book and, a small important detail, the store is part of the network of independent bookstores in New Aquitaine, which allows you to know the stock of other general bookstores and to direct the reader to another store in case of need.
Notes for everyone
Marie Sarrat doesn’t have time to read all the books she offers, but “a bookseller must know how to talk about books he hasn’t read,” she says. On certain works, she adds small reading notes called notules which are intended to present a book that we particularly appreciate. Customers are welcome to write their own notes.
-Manga drawing workshops are offered to young people one Saturday morning per month in the bookstore, led by professional illustrator Maxence Albane. For adults, writing workshops are offered once or twice a month by Marion Guevel. Upon registration and limited to six people, these next workshops will take place in the evening in the bookstore, with very varied themes.
