He had promised shocking revelations, and he had kept his word. In 2023, Prince Harry hit hard with The Substitute, an explosive book which revealed behind the scenes of the British royal family. And with such success, one might as well say that the husband had pocketed a nice fee.
When Prince Harry released his autobiography The Spare [“Le Suppléant” en français, ndlr] on January 10, 2023, the whole world held its breath. Revealed with lots of juicy extracts, the book, translated into 15 languages, immediately took on the appearance of a global event. The confessions were shattering: a fight with his brother William, confidences about his relationship with Queen Elizabeth II, or even his missions in Afghanistan. Harry spared nothing, especially his family, to win over readers. In parallel with this media tornado, the calibrated interviews on CBS and ITV had added fuel to the firefueling unprecedented enthusiasm. If the royal family is still grinding its teeth, two years after the book was released, Harry is still counting his tickets.
This colossal sum received by Harry after the publication of his memoirs
A nice jackpot. The Substitute left nothing to chance, and with each new revelation, sales took off. Published in January 2023 and reissued a few months later, the book rose to the top of sales upon its release, breaking previous records held by Barack and Michelle Obama, according to the New York Times. With nearly a million and a half copies sold in one day in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, the success was resounding. Two years later, the results are still just as good.
-L’Express declared, this Friday, January 10, that these memoirs would have brought in nearly 27 million dollars [26 millions d’euros, ndlr] to Meghan Markle’s darling. A dizzying sum, which only represents part of the income from the work… Indeed, according to the Daily MailArchie and Lilibet’s father had negotiated an advance of $20 million at the time [19,5 millions d’euros, ndlr] with the publisher Penguin Random House, an amount included in a global contract of 40 million dollars for the publication of four books. More than enough to make us forget the tumultuous past with Buckingham… at least for Harry and Meghan’s finances.
