Northern lights lit up the Vaud sky on the first day of the year
A Vaudois from La Côte immortalized the nighttime magic planned by NASA.

“I wasn’t super ready, but I went out as soon as I received the alert on the Aurora Forecast application,” says Corentin Mulkens, resident of Vufflens-le-Château, above Morges, on La Côte Vaudois.
The result, which the Vaudois published on social networks, is no less spectacular: an aurora borealis, a nocturnal and colorful fairyland which occurs when charged particles, mainly electrons and protons ejected by the solar wind, enter into collision with the molecules and atoms of the Earth’s atmosphere.

The phenomenon was predicted by NASA a few days ago, with the American agency indicating at the end of 2024 that “the Sun emitted three powerful solar flares on December 29”. Not common in our latitudes, «Northern lights» had already lit up the Swiss sky last October.

By the time the flow reaches the Earth, there is a grandiose spectacle, which MeteoSwiss did not fail to note.
