Bad news for smokers. Cigarette prices recorded an increase on Sunday January 1, 2025 following the increase in the domestic consumption tax (TIC) on tobacco.
This increase concerns certain brands of cigarettes, rolling tobacco, “muassel” (molasses used in hookahs), cigars sold individually and by box and cigarillos.
According to a circular from the Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII), the prices of manufactured tobacco have indeed changed.
“The service is informed that the order of the Minister of the Economy and Finance referred to in reference makes changes to the list of public sales prices for manufactured tobacco. Consequently, the service will find attached as an annex the new list of public sales prices for manufactured tobacco, as well as the basis for calculating the ad-valorem component of the related domestic consumption tax. The terms of the circulars referred to in reference are reported accordingly. These provisions take effect from January 1, 2025,” we can read.
This increase aims to reduce the price gap between Low Cost cigarettes and Premium cigarettes, with the aim of rebalancing the market.
-For example, packs of Camel, Gauloises, Chesterfield and Marquise saw their prices increase between 0.5 and two dirhams. However, the prices for premium brands have not changed.
