“Giving myself time and mental space”, Audrey Tautou speaks candidly about her new life, far from movie sets

For many years she was one of the most sought-after French actresses. Whether in or abroad. Became a global star with the cult hit The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain by Jean-Pierre Jeunet in 2001, Audrey Tautou then toured numerous film sets for more than fifteen years.

The unforgettable interpreter of Martine in The Spanish Inn by Cédric Klapisch (which she then repeated twice, in the sequels Russian dolls et Chinese puzzle) nevertheless decided to withdraw from the world of cinemaseveral years ago now. After recent roles at Edouard Baer (Open at night), Alain Chabat (Santa and Co.) or even Pierre Salvadori (On the loose!), the actress changed her activity.

A testimony on notoriety

It is now as a photographer that Audrey Tautou flourishes. She recently published Superficial (Fisheye editions), an intimate book in which she looks at her relationship with fame and images. A project in which the star frees himself from the gaze of others and the outlines of which she revealed, during an interview given to our colleagues at the magazine Beaux Arts. “When I was young, I dreamed of being a wildlife photographer and imagined myself as the French Dian Fossey, in the jungle with my camera”declares the actress.

For the actress Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulainthis work is above all a testimony to fame, or rather its sudden fame, for which she was not necessarily preparedas she points out: “It’s a book that addresses the adventure I experienced in becoming someone in the public eye overnight. At the time, I needed this support to better cope with what was happening to me, without having the plan of doing something about it one day.”

Audrey Tautou: “I wasn’t mature enough to do it earlier”

For the actress, the decision to withdraw from the world of cinema was beneficial. The one whose latest film, The Jesus Rolls by John Turturro, dates back to 2019 and observes the benefits of this retreat: “Putting my acting career on hold allowed me to finally give myself time and mental space to realize all the ideas that I had in mind, but that I had difficulty bringing to fruition until -there. (…) I wasn’t mature enough to do it earlier.” Audrey Tautou, a woman fulfilled in her new life.
