On December 25, 'Without Instructions' hits theaters, the Spanish remake of the successful 'Returns Are Not Accepted' by Eugenio Derbez, which broke records around the world after its premiere in 2013. On this occasion, Paco León takes the lead. witness of the Mexican actor and filmmaker under the direction of Marina Seresesky, who They have spoken with eCartelera to detail their work behind this new comedy with dramatic overtones.
“It comes to me already adapted to Spain. I already knew that this film existed and that it had been a huge success, but it is very adapted here. It has the basis, the adventures of the original film, but it is very changed, by the main character, its surroundings… But the emotion and plot have been kept intact“says Seresesky, who confesses that working with Paco León was one of his main motivations for joining the project.
“They fooled us very wellbecause they told me that she was there and they told her that I was there, and none of us were there yet,” jokes Paco León. “Nothing was signed yet, but we were there,” clarifies the filmmaker, also responsible for titles like Lo never seen or The Open Door'.
León highlights that he has not had the original film in mind, highlighting that the script for 'Without Instructions', for which he only has words of admiration, was enough for him to build his character, that of a carefree man who unwittingly finds himself in charge of a girl who is the result of a fleeting relationship. “I read a script that seemed very surprising to me all the time. A film that changed, that surprised you, a very good-natured father, and I saw myself a lot in the role. I haven't had more references than me.”
Although it is presented to us as a light comedy of affairs, the film soon surprises and takes the viewer to completely unexpected dramatic terrain. This is another of the virtues that its director and its protagonist highlight. “It starts with a tone of fairly light comedy, which you assume is predictable, but things are revealed. It's a movie matryoshka, which starts releasing different movies and surprises you“continues Paco León.
“I love that it's a comedy, where people go to have fun, but they put the emotion in there. Going to the movies to get excited seems like one of the most beautiful things that exist.. And if you go now at Christmas, with the people you love, it is something very nice. Laughing is beautiful, but if in addition to being emotional and having your family by your side, that is especially important to me,” Seresesky also highlights.
The state of 'There and back'
We did not miss the opportunity to ask Paco León about 'Aída y Volver', the long-awaited cinematic return of the 'Aída' series in which he is currently immersed. He did not go into specific details, although he highlighted the team's nerves about the high expectations generated and that, if everything goes according to plan, they will begin filming in March. “It's there, we have a lot of nerves with so many expectations, and that's good. There are still some tweaks to be made and we are there preparing the film for March”.
Regarding the difficulty of squaring the project after significant losses in the cast, such as that of Ana Polvorosa, the actor and director acknowledges that, like any other project, he has a headache about it. However, it is not something that worries him, since he considered it a natural part of the creation process. “It's always difficult to square everything. All movies are miracles that come out. I have had many moments in which I have been thinking 'This is not going to happen, we are not going to arrive, we are not going to release…' It is difficult, but it is part of the process,” he concludes.
'Without Instructions' opens in theaters on December 25.
