Autumn is ripe for good news… at least, on the literature side! One of the most prestigious prizes in children’s literature has named its winning book for the year 2024.
The TD Prize for Canadian Children’s and Youth Literature was awarded to Christine Beaulieu and Caroline Lavergne for their album Mitis salmonpublished by La Bagnole.
The actress and author Christine Beaulieu, who gave us the powerful play I like Hydrocontinues his reflection on our relationship to the territory, so that we understand it better in order to appropriate and protect it. First offered in documentary theater at the Jardin de Métis, the story tells the journey of salmon in our tumultuous waters. Caroline Lavergne’s illustrations truly constitute a work of art, they are so shimmering and lively. The album is therefore aimed at a wide audience, both children and adults.
Shannon Desbiens, from Librairie Les Bouquinistes, said this: “I also really liked I like Hydro by Christine Beaulieu, but I must admit that what I was most looking forward to discovering with Mitis salmonit was the work of Caroline Lavergne that I had discovered with Sarah’s film. Once again, I found the comfort of his illustrations and I savored the magnificent text on the salmon of the Mitis River. The way everything is constructed can only make us empathetic with the reality of this fish which inhabits our beautiful country. The happy mix between the images with the salmon and the audience participating in the play (from which this book is based) only increases the power of the narration and the awareness sought. Try it, you’ll never see this king of rivers the same way again! »
