Every year works fall into what is called the public domain. In France, 70 years after the death of an author, this has been the case since a European directive of 1993. In practice, this means that a book which has fallen into the public domain can of course still be sold , but it can also be reproduced freely and without financial compensation, and obviously the Internet has radically changed the situation.

Classic works in the public domain

There are several sites. The reference is that of the BNF (national library of France): French. By going there you will enter a world of extraordinary knowledge. We can salute the work carried out to open doors to books. You can enter by period, alphabetical order, themes, and you will find books but also videos, advertisements, press articles… (gallica.bnf.fr)

Otherwise, the Finnish site Altramenta is also very good, it also publishes manuscripts of contemporary authors which are not edited.
