The President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet and the President of the Senate Gérard Larcher are going to New Caledonia tomorrow and will stay there until November 14 for a consultation and dialogue mission.

This trip comes a few days after the trip by Overseas Minister François-Noël Buffet to the archipelago, devastated by riots which left 13 dead and billions of euros in damage. During his general policy declaration, Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced the abandonment of the constitutional reform unfreezing the electoral body specific to these local elections.

The thaw worried the independence camp which feared seeing the Kanak people marginalized. To this day, the loyalist camp denounces the fact that only people born in New Caledonia and residents who arrived in 1998 can vote in local elections.
