LE FIGARO. – Where does the expression come from? « Religion du Livre » ? How is it problematic for Jews and Christians?
Brother Olivier-Thomas VENARD. – This expression is derived from the Quranic formula “People of the Book”meaning “people of the Book” which designates the three religions called “Abrahamic”. The problem for Jews and Christians is that it carries «supersessionisme»that is to say that through it, Islam redefines Christianity and Judaism in the light of its own understanding of what a sacred book should be. Christianity has also sometimes had this defect, for example when the Talmud was burned in the 13th century, because it was believed that the Jews had corrupted their own Books!
