Translated from Polish by Margot Carlier
The phantom pain brings together the essential stories of Hanna Krall, those which best illustrate the themes and the very particular style, recognizable among all, of the Polish writer, such as “The Dybbuk”, “Hamlet” or “The Great-Grandson »…
In the present anthology, the texts that the French reader was able to discover, between 1993 and 2003, by Albin Michel, Gallimard and Autre, appear here as new versions, entirely revised and sometimes expanded. Other unpublished texts come from the last book published in Poland by the author: Significant details (2022).
From Take the good Lord in speed (1977), Hanna Krall explores the tragic fate of Polish Jews, survivors of the Shoah. More broadly, she lends her voice to all those who carry within them an indelible wound, the red-hot mark of History, whether they are Jews, Poles or Germans…
Committed to the side of memory, she basically wrote only one and the same immense book, against oblivion. The dual aspect of this work, both literary and documentary, halfway between fiction and truth, gives it its unique character and its universal dimension.
Phantom Pain is nothing short of an essential book.
