The Indian Ocean Children’s Book Fair will take place from Thursday October 10 to Sunday October 13, 2024 at the City of Saint-Denis. Supported by La Réunion des Livres, in partnership with SPL Territo’Arts, this tenth edition invites you to read, listen to stories or even travel through different shows. The opportunity to (re)instill a taste for the pleasure of opening a book, to little ones and older children alike. The cabin is the common thread chosen for the 2024 edition. On the program are stories of course, but also meetings, workshops and signings. Whether for toddlers, children and adolescents.

Thus, the show aims to promote reading among young people and promote access to culture for all audiences, including those who are furthest from books.

As a reminder, illiteracy affects more than 100,000 people in Island, or 20% of the population. A figure that has been sadly constant for at least three decades.

– Authors, illustrators with sharp pens

The Salon will bring together authors from Reunion Island, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mayotte, and even abroad.

Among the guests, Reunion Islanders will be able to find: Dalfine Ahamadi, an author from Mayotte or even Janik Coat from France, the designer Clément Devaux. In 2005, his meeting with Anne Didier and Olivier Muller gave birth to the comic strip Anatole Latuile.

We will also note the presence of Amélie Fléchais, designer. She wrote and illustrated Chemin Perdu (Métamorphose Collection), Le Petit Loup Rouge (Ankama Éditions), L’Homme Montagne (Delcourt), and Bergères Guerrières (Glénat) which won the Fauve Jeunesse 2022 at the Angoulême Festival.

Corinne Fleury, born in Mauritius and living in France, founded with Anthony Vallet, l’Atelier des Nomades, a publishing house dedicated to the literature of the Indian Ocean islands. Corinne Fleury is also an author for young people with two albums: Le Dodo aux plumes d’or (2014) and Grand Mama (2021), finalist for the 2023 Chronos Prize.

Catmouse James comes from Madagascar. In 2023, she was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cyclone BD International Festival in Reunion.

When it comes to authors and illustrators, Reunion Island is not left out.

David D’Eurveilher was born in Saint-Benoît. Passionate about drawing since his earliest years, he naturally turned to the School of Fine Arts in Reunion.

Djé-San, born in 1986 on Reunion Island, is originally from Saint-André. Although passionate about drawing and writing since a young age, he nurtured his passion for drawing as an autodidact. His meeting with Staark marks a turning point in his artistic journey. In 2024, he released his first manga Momoko published by Des Bulles dans l’Océan

Born in Reunion Island, Joëlle Écormier is a novelist and author of children’s literature. She has published around forty books and written for the theater. She regularly speaks in schools and libraries, and has led writing workshops for all audiences since 2001.

Theater artist, Cécile Hoarau savors words in a bilingual mode (French and Reunion Creole). She writes plays and dramatized stories. In 2018, she won the prize in the Premières pages – Department of La Réunion competition.

Authors and illustrators, there are many others who will be present during this 10th edition of the Indian Ocean Children’s Book Fair.

On this occasion, the Vanille 2024 prize will be awarded – with the support of the Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Reunion and Sofi – to three works from Reunion or the Indian Ocean. The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday October 10 at 11 a.m. at the Cité des Arts.

– The Show leaves its bubble –

If the vast majority of the Salon took place at the Cité des Arts, the art of reading will also be exported to the districts of Saint-Denis.

The show will shine at Château Morange and in all the media libraries of the public reading network in the north of the island with a Salon Hors les Murs.

On the program at Château Morange, on October 12, a workshop “To his story!” with Samuel Mélade. Come lend your voice and bring a tale to life in podcast form.

In the same place, a story cabin created by Célia Rivière will take place. Four children come together to play and indulge in the pleasure of reading: all at Lisette’s cabin to leaf through a new story.

Finally, at the departmental library of Reunion, the story of Jules Hermann and the invisible continent will be told. The story of an extravagant old uncle, of a magical book that he always dreamed of writing, of a submerged continent of which Bourbon Island is one of the last emerged peaks, of a secret science that seeks to see the invisible, of an ancient vanished civilization, both Malagasy and Reunionese, Gallic and Polynesian, and a thousand other shattering revelations, on which this exhibition investigates.

Exhibition at the Departmental Library of La Réunion from November 14.

At the François Mitterrand media library from October 10 to 23. Find Téhem’s original illustrations from the book Flore Mazigador published by Okopix.

On October 11, it’s “Ti marmit zistoir” at Trinité Park. Fall into the pot of stories and let yourself be lulled by a broth of imagination to start your vacation off right! An evening offered by the city of Saint-Denis.

– The Bike Show –

A soft mobility system will be put in place to encourage travel to the show by bike on weekends.

For example, on Saturday October 12, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a departure will be from the Alain Lorraine intercommunal library in La Source, Saint-Denis, to the Cité des Arts. A trip organized by the Réunion Island Collective of Bicycle Users (CRUB). Info and registrations: 02 62 90 49 90 or [email protected]

On October 13, a “Youth Book Fair special” family hike will cross the neighborhoods of Saint-Denis, ending with a visit to the fair. Info & registrations: 02 62 20 39 00 (registrations from September 30).

A show that is not just reserved for the youngest. This event is an opportunity for professionals in children’s literature to exchange views.
