Author of a book on solo parenting

The Carignanoise Geneviève Breton launched, on April 27, at the Larico bookstore in Chambly, her book Solo, choosing solo parenthood.

On November 22, 2021, Geneviève Breton underwent artificial insemination in order to become a single parent. She is now raising, without a life partner, Raphaëlle, who will be two years old next August.

Then just thirty years old, Geneviève Breton realized that she coveted the status of mother more than that of spouse. “A life without children, for me, was inconceivable,” says Ms. Breton.

After serious reflection and a lot of research, she made the fully conscious and responsible choice of solo parenthood. She therefore embarked on a process which included several stages. She realized that sources of information were few when she began the process. “I found that it was lacking in Quebec,” she noted in her journey.

The Carignanoise wanted to reveal her journey and the tools she acquired along the way. The author shares her initial thoughts up to the end of her daughter’s first year, in addition to guiding readers to several resources.

Approached by the editor

Geneviève Breton has documented, on social networks, her approach as a future single mother. This is how she was approached by Éditions Trécarré, a sub-branch of the publishing house Groupe Librex, and the project to write the book was born. “I find it important to talk about it to normalize this decision as well as to inform. There are still many mothers solo who are grieving while making this decision,” says the woman who wishes to democratize the different unconventional family models through her work. A dozen months after signing the contract with her publishing house, feverish and incredulous, she gave birth to the project.

act of courage

Geneviève Breton hears the word “courage” associated with the solo-parenting project. She sees it differently. “People see solo parenting as an act of courage, but for me it’s quite the opposite. It would have been crazy to risk never becoming a mother. »

The woman sees the day when being a single mother will not be a marginal model of society. On her multiple platforms, she demystifies the situation. “I hope to break taboos,” concludes Ms. Breton, who receives multiple positive messages from humans of all kinds.
