The first set was largely controlled by the Limburger who offered himself two breaks in quick succession against his opponent of the evening to win 6-3. The second set, meanwhile, was much more contested between the two men but it was the Italian who had the last word in the tie-break 7-6 (7/5).

The final set of this match was swift with a 6-0 and a triple ‘break’ achieved by Bergs which relaunched Belgium in this duel.

Davis Cup: Zizou Bergs equalizes for Belgium against the Netherlands after his victory against Griekspoor

Before this meeting, Bergs had already faced Cobolli and lost in the second round of the US Open this year in four sets with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.

On Tuesday, the Limburger had already achieved the feat of beating Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 39) in three sets 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3 to put Belgium and the Netherlands back on level terms.

Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen (both ATP 32 in doubles) will play the third decisive doubles match against the pair of Andrea Vavassori (ATP 9 in doubles) and Simone Bolelli (ATP 12 in doubles).

Alexander Blockx (ATP 253) lost to Matteo Berrettini (ATP 43) in the first match of the day. The 19-year-old from Antwerp fought for a long time, winning the first set, but finally lost in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 after a two-hour duel against the Italian.

Brazil (September 14) will be the next opponent of the Belgian team, which won its first duel against the Netherlands. The two best nations in the pool will qualify for the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain, in November. Each match is a best-of-three, with two singles and one doubles.
