Ankara had played a mediation role in 2022 for the conclusion of an agreement allowing the export of Ukrainian cereals by the Black Sea, of which Russia had later slammed the door.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan also pushed his counterpart to alleviate the sanctions on Syria, affirming according to his services that such a decision, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, “would contribute” to the stabilization of the country ravaged by the war.
At the end of March, Washington assured that a relaxation of sanctions would not take place as long as they have not noted progress on priorities such as the fight against “terrorism”.
According to Ankara, Recep Tayyip Erdogan also told Washington that humanitarian aid should be issued “without interruption” in the Gaza Strip, devastated by war and subject to a total blockade of Israel for more than two months.
