Spain welcomed 17.1 million international visitors in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 5.7 % compared to the same period in 2024, according to data published Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
This figure marks a new historic record for the period, consolidating the position of Spain as the second world tourist destination, behind France, said the Ministry of tourism in a press release. In 2024, the country had received nearly 93.8 million foreign visitors.
This growth was also resulted in a significant increase in tourism expenses, which raised 23.5 billion euros in the first quarter, up 7.2 % over a year. For the ministry, this result reflects an increase in Spanish tourism, a long -standing strategy by the authorities.
According to the INE, the main countries of origin of foreign visitors over the period were the United Kingdom (3.1 million, +4.6 %), France (2.1 million, +7.1 %) and Germany (also 2.1 million, but slightly decreasing 0.1 %).
British tourists also placed themselves at the top of total spending, representing 15.9 %of the total, ahead of the Germans (12.3 %) and visitors from the Nordic countries (8.8 %). In March, the average daily expenditure per tourist reached 188 euros.
This new influx of visitors occurs in a context of the rise of tensions around surcourtry in Spain, where the inhabitants denounce increasing pressure on local infrastructure and an explosion of rents in several very tourist areas.
Faced with these challenges, the Minister of Tourism, Jordi Hereu, insisted on the need to “diversify the destinations” and to “disappeared attendance”, in order to better distribute economic benefits throughout the territory.
