Venezuelan opponents who have been refugeed from the Argentina Embassy in Caracas for over a year have been “now safe on American soil” thanks to a “successful rescue”, the United States Diplomacy Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday.
Threatened with arrest, five close collaborators of the Venezuelan opposition Maria Corina Machado took refuge in the Argentine Embassy on March 20, 2024, four months before the July presidential election after which Nicolas Maduro was declared winner for a third term.
“The United States greets the successful rescue of all the hostages held by the Maduro regime at the Argentina Embassy in Caracas,” said Marco Rubio on X, calling opponents of “venezuelans”. “Following a meticulous operation, all hostages are now safe on American soil,” added the Secretary of State.
Stormy relations
“Maduro’s illegitimate regime has undermined Venezuela institutions, violated human rights and endangered our regional security,” he accused, while Washington and Caracas have particularly stormy relations.
-The United States, like the European Union or even Argentina, do not recognize the victory of Nicolas Maduro who, with the support of the army and an administration under orders, was sworn in in January.
Since July 2024, the Venezuelan opposition has been shouting in fraud and claimed the victory of its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
The opposition had asked the diplomatic community accredited to Venezuela to try to find a solution to the situation of the five opponents.
Initially, there were six of them found refuge at the embassy but in December 2024, one of them, Fernando Martinez Mottola, had gone to the authorities and had obtained parole. He died on February 26 due to health problems.
