Venezuelan opponents who have been refugeed from the Argentina Embassy in Caracas for over a year have been “now safe on American soil” thanks to a “successful rescue”, the United States Diplomacy Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday.

Threatened with arrest, five close collaborators of the Venezuelan opposition Maria Corina Machado took refuge in the Argentine Embassy on March 20, 2024, four months before the July presidential election after which Nicolas Maduro was declared for a third term.

“The United States greets the successful rescue of all the hostages held by the Maduro regime at the Argentina Embassy in Caracas,” said Marco Rubio on X, calling opponents of “venezuelans”. “Following a meticulous operation, all hostages are now safe on American soil,” added the Secretary of State.

Stormy relations

“Maduro’s illegitimate regime has undermined Venezuela institutions, violated human and endangered our regional security,” he accused, while Washington and Caracas have particularly stormy relations.
