Habemus Papam. In a few minutes, Cardinal Mamberti will pronounce the famous formula. Indeed, this Thursday, May 8, 2025, around 6 p.m., white smoke raised in the Vatican heavens, announcing the election of a new pope.
Follow the first appearance of the new sovereign pontiff live with us.
6:13 p.m.: The bells of the Saint-Pierre basilica ring
In addition to the white smoke, the bells of the Saint-Pierre basilica ring at full volley. Since 2005, to avoid confusion, the bells have been ringing during the emanation of white smoke.

The new pope will appear in a few minutes at the Balcony of the Saint-Pierre Basilica.
The Protodiacre, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, will therefore announce the famous We have a popebut the text is actually a little longer than that:
I tell you great joy: pope. The eminent and reverend the Lord, Lord [prénom (s) de l’élu]St. Roman Church Cardinal [nom de famille de l’élu]who has placed her name [nom de règne de l’élu].
-In French, it gives:
I tell you a great joy: we have a pope. The very eminent and very reverend Lord, Monseigneur [prénom (s) de l’élu]cardinal of the holy Roman church [nom de famille de l’élu]who gave himself the name of [nom de règne de l’élu].
6:09 p.m.: And now?
Once elected, the new Pope must answer two questions from Cardinal Doyen: do you accept your canonical election as a sovereign pontiff? What name do you want to be called? Responding “yes” to the first, the elected official becomes immediately Pope and bishop of Rome.
Then, one by one, the cardinals pay homage and lend their obedience to the new pope.
Right after accepting his charge, the barely elected pope isolates himself in a small room adjoining the Sistine Chapel, the Chamber of Tears, to give free rein to his emotion in the face of the magnitude of the mission that awaits him.
6:08 p.m.: White smoke above the sixtine chapel
The 133 cardinals voters agreed on the name of the successor to Pope Francis, who died on April 21.
White smoke has just escaped from the chimney installed on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, a sign of the choice of a new pontiff sovereign, and therefore, from the end of the conclave.
