It gets freezing cold, the temperatures rustle up to -9 degrees into the depth -and that days before the so -called ice saints.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has released a new warning map, practically all of East Germany shines yellow. That means: warning level 1 of 4 has been reached.
In Berlin, Magdeburg and Schwerin, up to -5 degrees near the ground on Tuesday night, in Dresden -3 degrees, in northern Brandenburg are even up to -9 degrees. And a little further west, it becomes really cold: -4 degrees are predicted for Hamburg and Hanover.
The DWD warning before light to moderate frost applies until Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. “It feels like a fat crash,” said the graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung T-Online. He reminds of the warm days that lasted: “The last week was violent and clearly too warm for the season, so it could only go downhill,” Jung relativizes the current fall in temperature.
From Tuesday, the temperatures will slowly rise again. “It gets warmer,” says weather expert Karsten Brandt from the Donnerwetter.de portal.
And then the so -called ice saints are waiting: From 11th to May 15th, five martyrs and bishops are honored in the Catholic saint calendar, which according to a series of old peasant rules will make it really frosty year after year before it becomes permanently beautiful.
However, Dominik Jung does not believe in these peasant rules. “Sometimes they apply, sometimes not, that’s all in the random area,” he writes T-Online on request. They are “nice, rhyming sentences, nothing more.
In 2025, May 11th falls on a Sunday: Mother’s day. On this day it looks “rather warm”, so young. There are more than 20 degrees in the west. And further: “I do not see snow, maybe in the high areas of the Alps, but there can also be snow in June, July or August. I was already driving on my birthday on August 4th at 2,000 meters in Obertauern in Austria.”
Karsten Brandt also does not believe in a new temperature fall around the ice saints to the minus area. From May 11th to May 15th it could get a little colder, he says T-Online. “But it won’t be enough for frost.”
Brandt is convinced that the recessed cold is simply more likely to occur this year. The coming nights are probably the last frost nights of the season: “Then we are through.”
The boss of Donnerwetter.de considers it possible that this corresponds to a general trend. Already in the past four years it was really warm from 11th to May 15th. “It could be that the ice saints come earlier than a few decades ago,” he says in an interview with T-Online. The cause may be in the climate crisis, which generally increase the temperatures.
