It is in a context marked by reforms and an assertive desire to modernize the transport sector that the Algerian Minister of Transport, Said Sayoud, spoke before the media, on the sidelines of the meeting between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and business leaders at the International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers. The event, which is part of a series of initiatives to energize the national economic fabric, served as a forum to approach several sensitive files, including that of the national airline, Air Algeria, regularly under the fire of criticism concerning its performance, in particular the recurring delays in its flights.
Asked about the delays accused by Air Algeria flights, Said Sayoud delivered a statement that surprised more than one observer. Indeed, the Minister has completely recognized the extent of the problem in a recent past, while highlighting notable progress made in recent months. “Before, delays affected 50% of flights. Today, more than 70% of flights take off on time, “he revealed. This statement, supported by data he says he consults daily, shows a statistically significant improvement in the punctuality of the company, a point often denounced by Algerian travelers and the diaspora.
This statement, about delays, comes as Algeria is going through an ambitious restructuring phase. The Minister’s declaration is not limited to a simple encrypted observation. It is part of a broader discourse on the progressive transformation of Air Algeria, in a climate where public opinion remains vigilant. The problem of delays, which has long been perceived as a symbol of deeper dysfunctions in the management of the company, is in the process of being treated in a concrete manner. This involves not only a better internal organization, but also through an overhaul of operational processes, ranging from flight planning to ground coordination.
It is also important to replace this improvement in a context where Air Algeria is engaged in a vast program to modernize its fleet, with in particular the order of 16 new devices from Boeing and Airbus, as well as in progress negotiations for the acquisition of two additional planes. These investments are not only intended to extend the company’s capacity, but also to strengthen its reliability, efficiency and competitiveness in an increasingly competitive air market. Reducing delays could therefore be one of the first visible signs of a paradigm shift inside the company.
By choosing to communicate transparently on the figures related to punctuality, the Minister of Transport also sends a clear message to public opinion and to Air Algeria customers: the problems are identified, the solutions are underway, and the results are starting to be felt. The displayed objective seems to be the rehabilitation of the national company as a credible player in regional and international air transport, capable of responding to the quality standards expected by passengers.
Improving the punctuality of thefts, as spectacular as it may be, alone cannot be enough to completely restore the image of Air Algeria. But it constitutes a strong indicator of the dynamics of change triggered. The fact that this progression was confirmed by a ministerial official, in such a solemn institutional framework, gives weight to this development. It remains to be seen whether this trend will be maintained in time and if it will be accompanied by other deep reforms, particularly in terms of on -board services, human resources management and openness to new destinations. The Algerian sky seems to want to change course, and Air Algeria could well be preparing a new takeoff.
