During the match between Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs from Chicago to PNC Park, a dramatic incident marked the evening: Kavan Markwooda 20 -year -old young man fell from a height of 21 feet (about 6.4 meters) from the stands of the right field, landing on the warning track. The accident occurred during the seventh round, shortly after a double of two points struck by Andrew McCutchen. The emergency services intervened quickly, and Markwood was transported in critical condition to the General Hospital Allegheny.
According to an update published on Saturday on the GoFundme page created to support his convalescence, Markwood is now “awake, alert and capable of speaking”. Jennifer Phillipsorganizer of fundraising and former Markwood teacher, described this improvement as “nothing less than a miracle”, while stressing that the young man still has a long way to go towards healing.
A former university football player, Markwood began his career at Walsh University before joining the Cardinals team at Wheeling University. He is recognized for his resilience and his strength of character, qualities which, according to his relatives, will help him to overcome this test.
An internal investigation carried out by Pittsburgh Pirates revealed that, although Markwood did not buy alcohol itself, he consumed two beers offered by other members of his group. Spectators’ testimonies diverge as to his behavior before the fall, some saying that he seemed to be intoxicated, while others have noticed anything unusual until he gets up to celebrate a game. The Pittsburgh authorities classified the incident as an accident.
The President of Pirates, Bob Nuttingexpressed his deep sadness in the face of the accident, declaring: “Pirate baseball is a community, and our fans are like a family. In times like this, we have to unite, support each other and keep Kavan and his loved ones in our prayers.”
