The adaptation of Friborg forests to climate change is a priority for the canton of Friborg. In the adaptation of the “Forest Protection (harmful organizations and forests) directive” retroactively entry into force on January 1, 2025, the forest and nature service now subsidizes trees of trees which aim to regenerate vulnerable stands to climate change. This measure concerns in particular the essences of beech trees or spruces damaged by drought and periods of heat wave. The space left by these cuts offers a brightness necessary to promote a natural rejuvenation of the forest with diversified essences.
In forests with a public reception function, tree cuts to improve safety as a result of phenomena associated with climate change (drought, diseases) are also subsidized. This measure applies in particular to infrastructure such as grilling places, health courses, huts, park squares or very busy forest roads.
As part of this new strategy, the phytosanitary struggle against bostryches attacking the fir trees and the spruces changes CAP. Subsidies are now granted only in order to preserve the remaining stands which have a future in the face of climate change, that is to say above 800 to 900 meters above sea level, depending on the stations. The directive also specifies the damaged wood exploitation carried out in the context of a phytosanitary intervention according to the period of the year and the activity or not of the Bostryche, as well as the state of the situation. Indeed if he can take a certain coloring, the wood reached by the bostryche does not lose anything in technical quality and can be valued in the field of construction or as a wood energy.
